A tribute to veterans won’t be blooming in downtown Vernon.

Plans by the City of Vernon to install a poppy crosswalk by the cenotaph have been shot down by the Royal Canadian Legion’s head office in Ottawa.

”They have a play book on what you can do,” said Mayor Akbal Mund.

“One of them is the poppy will never be laid on the ground so it’s not viewed as being trod upon.”

However, that ruling from Ottawa won’t completely dash a tribute veterans.

The city is now working with the local legion branch to install commemorative signs along the walkway between 31st and 32nd avenues.

“It could be called veterans’ way. They (local legion) love the idea,” said Mund.

A design for the signs is currently being developed.
