North Okanagan residents are being urged to enthusiastically accept a challenge.

Vernon philanthropist George Galbraith will match donations up to $150,000 for the Okanagan Rail Trail by June 30.

“It’s the matching part that’s really important,” said Juliette Cunningham, Regional District of North Okanagan director.

“It’s an opportunity to maximize that (Galbraith’s contribution).”

The Okanagan Rail Trail Initiative is currently $4 million towards its $7.8 million goal to develop the 49.5-kilometre rail trail from Coldstream to Kelowna.

Bob Fleming, RDNO chairperson, hopes local residents will see a value to the rail trail economically and socially.

“People who are donating can double their money for the next three months thanks to the generosity of Mr. Galbraith,” said Fleming.

Naturalists gather

Nature lovers from across the province are coming to the North Okanagan.

The North Okanagan Naturalists Club will host the B.C. Nature fall general meeting Sept. 21 to 23 at the Village Green Hotel.

“It’s bringing people from across the province and the club is active throughout the North Okanagan,” said Bob Fleming, chairperson of the Regional District of North Okanagan, which is providing a $500 sponsorship to the event.

Between 140 and 150 delegates will attend meetings, lectures and special presentations.
