Diverse opinions are coming together in an attempt to find compromise on the Shuswap River.

The Regional District of North Okanagan initiated a mediation process after conflict arose over possible boat restrictions on the river.

“We’re just starting the process,” said Alex Grzybowski, a consultant leading the discussions.

One of the goals is to have broad stakeholder representation from the lower and upper parts of the river, including fishermen, environmental stewards, property owners and businesses.

Members are still currently being sought.

“We’re looking for representatives from the constituencies interested in the matter,” said Grzybowski.

As a result of the structure still being formalized, no public meetings have been set yet. However, there will be a role for the general public in determining if there is a need for boat management.

“This is intended to be an open process where this is constructive dialogue,” said Grzybowski.

It’s anticipated that a report on boat management will go before the RDNO board by the end of May.

“The hope is for consensus recommendations on the next steps for motorized vessels,” said Grzybowski.
