Vandals are trashing a recreational resource in Vernon.

Over the weekend, someone left the driveway at Marshall Field and drove across four soccer fields.

“Field five was driven over extensively and there’s quite a bit on field four,” said Kai Tolpinrud, general manager of the adjacent VantageOne Indoor Soccer Centre.

Also hit were fields one and two.

“Because there’s snow cover, oit’s hard to know what the extent of the damage is but there’s some real ruts out there,” said Tolpinrud.

Tolpinrud is concerned damage to the fields could negatively impact soccer in the spring, particularly if the vandalism were to occur in March when the ground is soft.

“That’s game over for the soccer season,” he said.

Tolpinrud would like to see barriers installed to keep vehicles off the fields.

“Put more concrete barriers in or big rocks. There’s any number of options,” he said.

“Something has to be done because the cost of fixing the fields outweights the cost of installing barriers.”

The Regional District of North Okanagan is investigating the vandalism.
