Enderby officials wish a major celebration success, but there are no dollars involved.

City council has declined a request from the Splatsin to financially sponsor the 35th annual Secwepemc Gathering, which runs Aug. 18 to 20.

“That’s not anything we can do,” said Mayor Greg McCune of limited financial resources.

“We struggle to even support events in our own community.”

City staff, though, have been working with Secwepemc Gathering organizers to address issues like accommodations.

The Secwepemc Gathering will be held at the Splatsin Community Centre and there will be representatives from the 17 bands of the Secwepemcu’lecw or Shuswap nation.

“This gathering is the largest event held in the nation,” said Wayne Christian, Splatsin chief, in a letter to Enderby council.

More than 2,000 people are expected to attend.

Sponsorship could range from less than $1,000 to more than $10,000.

“This three-day event takes a considerable amount of planning, volunteer support and in-kind and cash donations,” said Christian.

“Your financial support will be used towards important elements such as food/meals, entertainment, purchasing or renting equipment, first aid and security.”
