North Okanagan residents can learn more about the faiths in their community.

The Sacred Spaces Tour will be hosted by the Vernon Interfaith Bridging Saturday.

“The purpose of the event is to dispel stereotypes, increase understanding, and build friendships,” said Richard Birnie, a member of Vernon Interfaith Bridging.

The tour will include a visit to the Vernon mosque and Islamic centre, a First Nations ceremony at Polson Park and presentations on the Baha’i and Buddhist faiths at the People Place.

“This is an opportunity for members of the public to learn about other faiths and cultures and experience something unique in their own community. You do not have to belong to any particular faith group to attend. We welcome everyone,” said Birnie.

Those interested in attending the Sacred Spaces Tour should meet at the Vernon mosque just before 9 a.m. at 3414 17th Ave. It is expected that the tour will be completed by noon at the People Place.

“Given the recent rise in hate crimes in North America, including the attack on a mosque in Quebec, this event and its goals are timely,” said Annette Sharkey, with the Social Planning Council.

“Many people in the community would like to do something concrete to show their support for diversity. Potentially stepping outside your comfort zone by attending this event is a very positive first step.”

Vernon Interfaith Bridging began in 2010 and the vision for the group is to live in a community where people of different faiths and cultures live in relationships of peace and understanding.
