The City of Vernon is pulling together a team to address safety concerns.

A task force will be formed to consider how to deal with complaints from businesses that street people are scaring customers away.

“If we don’t pay attention to that, we’re not doing our job,” said Coun. Catherine Lord.

The details of the task force aren’t known but it could include representatives from council, businesses, social agencies and possibly some residents.

On Monday, council heard from business owner Vicki Eide, who circulated a petition calling for action.

“Our businesses are suffering. The problem is spread throughout the city,” she said.

“We’re a drug apocalypse and we’re collateral. So many people are afraid to come downtown. We need something done.”

Eide says there is a problem with theft, prostitution and drug use.

“They’re bold, they’re aggressive,” she said of the individuals causing trouble.

“We need help from you (council). That’s why we elected you.”

Coun. Brian Quiring, who owns a business downtown, challenged Eide.

“We’ve never had an incident where a staff person is threatened. I’m concerned that a message is getting out that downtown is unsafe and I don’t believe it is,” he said.

Coun. Juliette Cunningham recognized that there is a problem and pointed out that the city and social agencies are lobbying senior government for housing to help the homeless.

“We have to work together because ignoring it isn’t the solution,” she said.

Mayor Akbal Mund says the city has increased resources for bylaw enforcement.

“We are looking at what we can do within the required law,” he said.

On Monday, council voted to prohibit temporary shelters in Linear Park along 25th Avenue as of Feb. 1, 2018.

“Winter is coming and the park will be cleared out eventually (because of cold weather),” said Coun. Scott Anderson.

“The year is almost over. We will be sending a message for next year.”
