It’s going to cost a bit more in Lumby to turn on the tap and flush the toilet.

On Tuesday, council adopted the water and sewer rate bylaws for 2017.

“It will help cover the operaitonal costs,” said Mayor Kevin Acton.

Water consumption rates are going up $0.07 per cubic metre for 2017 (from $0.75 to $0.82).

Sewer consumption rates are also going up $0.07 per cubic metre for 2017 (from $0.50 to $0.57).

For a household that consumes 1,200 cubic metres annually, this translates into an extra $7 per month for each service or $14 per month in total.

“This is largely due to how administration was being calculated in each function,” said Jeremy Sundin, chief financial officer.

“During 2016, a review was done by staff that concluded water and sewer were not paying an appropriate amount of administration expense, so the amount was increased in these functions. This had the effect of reducing the administration expense in the general fund, which helped keep the general municipal tax increase to a low 1.18 per cent for 2017.”

Also on Tuesday, council received the village’s 2016 financial statements from Rossworn Henderson accountants.

“We had a really good year. We ended up with a surplus and transferred money into reserves,” said Coun. Nick Hodge.
