BROTHER (BART) BARTHOLOMEW

SCHERBA, OSBM

Died November 25th, 2005 at 92 years of age. BROTHER BART, as he was affectionately known, was born in Buford, Alberta, and raised in Vernon, BC. He entered the Basilian Novitiate in Mundare, AB in 1930, and professed his solemn vows in the Order of St. Basil the Great in 1935. He spent his religious life in the Order working as a tailor, cook, carpenter, and assistant in the Basilian Press. From 1955 until 2004, he managed and directed the fruit farms and vineyards of the Basilian Fathers in Grimsby, ON. He is predeceased by his parents, his brothers John, Michael, and Peter and by his sisters Katherine (Funke) and Mary (Leeworthy). He will be missed by his remaining sisters Anne Lipton, Pauline Leong, and Bessie Shamanksi, by numerous nieces and nephews and extended family members as well as by members of the Order of St. Basil the Great. Visitation at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 103 Mountain Street, Grimsby on Tuesday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Panachyda, 7 pm at the church. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 30th, 2005 at 10:00am. Interment will take place in the Basilian Fathers Cemetery in Mundare, Alberta.
