Bruno Sammartino

SAMMARTINO

Mr. Bruno (Booney) Sammartino was born in Trail, B.C. on March 29th, 1917, the second son of Vincenzo & Ermina Sammartino and died in the Vernon Jubilee Hospital on July 6th, 2006 at the age of 89 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Antoinette, to whom he was married for 67 years, his children; Brian, Sandra (Bob) and Tony (Dana), his daughter-in-law, Carrol, his grandchildren; Maria, Marco (Sharyn), Lana (Dan), Christine (Derek), Sammy, Natalie, Ryan

(Kenia), Paul (Jennifer), David, Lisa and Mia, his great-grandchildren; Declan, Sylvanna, Morgan, Brooklyn, Jasmine, Solomon and Titus, his sisters; Eleanna (Mario) and Lydia (John), his sisters-in-law; Louise, Betty and Irene and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was predeceased by his son, Terry and his brothers; Mario, Corrado, Rolando, Sergio and Lloyd.

A great family man and full of life, Booney excelled in many sports. A natural athlete, he played Sr. A. Lacrosse, Sr. A. Hockey, was active in curling, golf, horseshoes (B.C. Games), basketball, swimming, diving, tennis (Kootenay Champion) and all through his life he encouraged and participated in sports promotion. He was past Lacrosse Commissioner of B.C., was instrumental in establishing the new curling and outdoor skating rink as well as the Vernon Horseshoe Club. Booney was a long time member of the Spallumcheen Golf Club, President of the Horseshoe Club, a former member of the Vernon Fish and Game Club, coached both hockey and lacrosse, refereed Sr. A. Hockey in the 1950’s and achieved an “8 ender” in curling at the age of 85. He was a W.W. II Veteran who served in England and the Aleutian Islands and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #25 since arriving in Vernon. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish and prospect the entire length and breadth of B.C. Having been a resident of Vernon since 1948, he leaves many friends who will truly miss him. Cremation preceded a Celebration Of Booney’s Life which will be held at Bethel Funeral Chapel on Monday, July 10th, 2006 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Dave Bootsma officiating. A Reception will follow in the Tea Room at Bethel Funeral Chapel. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Booney to the B.C.
