George Sommervill

George Patrick Sommervill, BA, LLB, passed away on Saturday, November 4, 2006 at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital, Vernon, B.C. at the age of 75 years. Pat was born in Saskatoon on August 17th, 1931. He attended City Park Collegiate and received a B.A, and a Law Degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1955. He married Joyce Lorraine Bundy in 1957.

Pat articled with Justice Emmett Hall who

instilled in him a passion for criminal law and a belief that legal representation is a

right not a privilege. In 1957 Pat became

the Crown Prosecutor for the City of

Saskatoon. Within a few short years

and struggling with alcoholism, he lost his job and the privilege of

practicing law. Pat credits Alcoholics Anonymous with helping him achieve his 43 years of sobriety and his return to the career he loved.

The road back started in January of 1965 when Pat and family moved to Alberta. He was hired by Western Land Services as a document checker. Within four years he was the company President. During this time he was reinstated as a solicitor in Saskatchewan by a unanimous decision by the benchers of the Law Society. In 1973 Pat became the Director of the Legal Aid Society of Alberta and in 1978 he returned his family to Saskatchewan to serve as Director of the Northern Legal Services

Office in La Ronge and then to Yorkton where he acted as Senior

Counsel for Legal Aid. Pat was also the driving force behind the

establishment of Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers (LCL) in

Saskatchewan. Pat and Joyce retired to Vernon in 1988.

Pat was born with a paralyzed left arm and had a voluntary amputation at the age of 21. He didn’t see himself as having a disability. He often remarked that having one arm actually improved his golf and tennis game. Pat had a passion for travel and adventure, was a gifted athlete and a collector of art and antiques.

Pat is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Joyce (nee Bundy)

of Vernon, B.C. his children, Shelley (Mike Day), Mike (Penny), Jolynn

(Graham Law), five grandchildren, Melissa, Ryan, Brant, Brynn and Zoe, the Sommervill and Patrick cousins, nieces and nephew, and his dog, Minko. He was predeceased by his parents, Gertrude Patrick Sommervill and George Byron Sommervill, his brothers, John Patrick Sommervill and Dr. Ronald Patrick Sommervill.
