On the morning of October 25th, 2004 GERRIT KRYT went Home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the age of 90 with his loving family at his side. Gerrit was born January 26th, 1914 in the small village Koog an de Zaan in Holland. He started at age 12 as grocery delivery boy and later opened his own store which he operated for 19 years. In 1937 he married Nellie Koel. Through World War II Gerrit served his country in the Dutch underground and received a medal of honor for his participation. In 1950 he and his family immigrated to Canada arriving in Abbotsford, B.C. Shortly after this they moved to Port Alberni and later Victoria helping to establish an immigrant church in those communities. In 1956 they returned to Holland thinking they would stay there, but 4 months later they returned and settled in Surrey B.C. where Gerrit became a brick layer with the municipality. In 1972 Gerrit retired and he and Nellie moved to Vernon. Gerrit was active in his church and also placed numerous Bibles in the Vernon area hotels for the Canadian Bible League. Gerrit will be remembered for his sense of humor which brought a smile to many faces and his positive outlook to life. He is fondly known by many in town and the mall as the candy man since he always had a bag of candy to give to anyone he met. Gerrit was predeceased by son Laurence in 1951 and his loving wife Nellie of 62 years in 1999. He is survived by daughter Mary Spoor(Jake) of Vernon; sons Gary Kryt (Katherine) of Lynden, Washington; Trevor Kryt (Carol) of Victoria; 10 grandchildren James Spoor (Isabel), Melinda Jacott (Lonnie), Vincent Spoor, Lucas Kryt, Julien Kryt, Garret Kryt, Nathan Walsh, James Walsh, Jeremy Kryt, and Madison Kryt and great grandchildren Jazmyn, Jadyn, Jacob, Samantha, Ben and Daniel. Viewing will take place on Saturday, October 30th, 2004 from 9:00 am through 10:30 am at Bethel Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at 11:00 am at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. The service for Gerrit Kryt will be a celebration of his life in the Vernon Christian Reformed Church at 3605-12th Street on Saturday, October 30th at 2:00 P.M.
