We regret to announce the passing of Gordon Charles Ritchings in Vernon Jubilee Hospital on Monday, February 13, 2006. He is survived by his wife Morag Ritchings (MacLean), daughters Sally Harrison (George) and Susan Fanshaw (Roger), 4 grandsons, 2 great grand children, his sister Shirley Spicer, 3 brothers in-law and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Albert and Olive Ritchings, his stepmother Birdie Ritchings and 3 sisters Hazel Framst, Hilda McAndrew and Jean Strong. Gordon was born on July 18, 1920 in Vancouver, BC and worked in the family business, Strathcona Floral Company, until moving to Vernon in 1967 buying the Vernon Flower Shop. After selling the store he was a sales representative for a Wholesale Florist. During the war, Gordon served overseas with the RCAF. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and the Boy Scouts. To many people in Scouting, Gordon was known as “Mr. Popcorn” for all the work he did in the Popcorn Fundraising in the Okanagan and other parts of BC. Gordon was awarded the Silver Acorn in 1989, the Bar to the Silver Acorn in 1998 and was one of the first awarded a special medallion for his contribution to the Canadian Fellowship of B-P Guilds. Gordon always believed that if you joined an organization you should contribute to it. During his life he was Secretary and District Representative for F.T.D. in BC, one of the founders of Flowers Canada, Secretary and President for Kiwanis in Vernon and Secretary and Canadian President of the B-P Guild. A Memorial Service will be held at Bethel Funeral Home on Saturday, February 18th at 1:00pm.
