It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of Gordon Ivan Schnare at age 87.

Gordon was born in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia to parents Hazel and Ivan Schnare. He was predeceased by his brother Ernest.

Gordon graduated from Lunenburg Academy and his youthful years were spent between the militia and acquiring an education. He received a Bachelor of Science from Dalhousie University, Masters from Gonzaga, and teaching certificate from U.B.C.

It was on a summer militia trip by train to Vancouver Island, he decided that British Columbia was the place he wanted to spend his life. After teaching training he drove back to Nova Scotia and on June 27, 1953 he married his high school girlfriend, Evelyn Mare Hynick. They stayed in Lunenburg for a month and then on August 1st they started the long drive to Falkland, B.C. where they had teaching positions. Then 3 years later they moved to Armstrong where Gordon taught at the Armstrong High School. He retired at age 57.

He and his family spent two years at Metz, France. Gordon taught at the Bas School of the Canadian Forces. While at Metz, they travelled extensively to photograph historical sights to use in Social Studies classes when back in Armstrong.

Together they spent five summers as volunteers at B.C. Parks which provided some interesting experiences. He later wrote a book about his friend Thomas McQuillan who was a very successful prospector.

Gordon had a surprise event that took place in Nova Scotia. He was fishing with friends and landed a 500+ tuna. What an ordeal to land it.

Marie and Gordon were parents to four children: Tom (Helen), Beth (David), Graham (Miriam) and Philippe (Sarah) and grandparents to ten precious grandchildren. Gordon was active for years in the Armstrong Lions Club and the Vernon Swim Club when Graham and Philippe were competitors.

Special thanks to the staff of the Pleasant Valley Manor. There will be no service by request. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family at www.MyAlternatives.ca.
