Grace Lillian McPherson

Grace passed away in the evening after spending the day with her family and friends visiting her at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Her stay there was brief and she had lived independently at Hillview Meadows as was her hope and her wish.

Grace grew up in Vancouver and graduated from John Oliver High School. She went on to Business School and started work at the Bank of Montreal immediately. She married Mac McPherson in 1943 and they had two children before they decided to move to Castlegar in 1948. They built a home there and she worked at the Bank of Montreal part time at first and then eventually worked full time until she retired in 1977. She loved her work and was always there for her clients, many of whom have been life long friends. She and Mac spent their time boating and camping on the Arrow Lakes and working with young people in the Junior Badminton program – often taking them to tournaments all over B.C. as well as hosting tournaments in Castlegar. In 1965, they built and operated the Timberlane Lodge and again made life long friends among the tenants in their building….some of whom visited her regularly until she passed away. She and Mac retired to Balfour in 1986 to a home they renovated right on Kootenay Lake beside the ferry slip. They were founding members of the Balfour Golf Course and took up golfing seriously. They were very happy in Balfour but in 1998 they moved to Vernon to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Hillview Meadows was right beside the golf course and when Mac passed away, Grace took up golf again and was fortunate to find good friends at Hillview who watched for her ball when her eyesight failed. Grace was always happy to have guests and loved to open her home to friends of her children, associates at work, any badminton players who needed billeting or any friends or family who could come for dinner. At Hillview, she enjoyed her bridge club, the Happy Hour every other Friday and the “Out to Lunch Bunch.”

Grace leaves her daughter, Gayle (Dennis) Powers; her son, Gord (Lyn) McPherson; her god-daughter, Linda Horst; her grandchildren, Dennis (Lilly) Powers, Jodi Hawthorne, Scott (Erica) McPherson, Allison (Kris) Hedstrom and Dana (Darren) Meiner; as well as ten great-grandchildren, Jordan, Sydney, Makayla, Reece, Blake, Ella, Owen, Dylan, Ian and Ross. She also leaves her sisters, Marge, Blanche (Jack) and Edna and their families.

At Grace’s request she was cremated and there will be no Funeral Service held but you may remember her by making a donation to your favourite charity or just by sitting down and having a drink in her memory. She was a special lady.

We would like to thank her long time family doctor, Gavin Smart, April & Bill Sanders and the wonderful nurses on 3rd Floor East of the Vernon Jubilee Hospital.
