GRETCHEN ANGUS MITCHELL

GRETCHEN ANGUS MITCHELL passed away peacefully at home January 12, 2005 following a struggle with melanoma. She was born March 23, 1946 in Victoria, B.C. and grew up in Vancouver, graduating from high school at Crofton House School. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alberta and a Masters of Social Work degree from University of Toronto. She worked in Toronto as a community organizer. After four years in Vancouver, she settled with her husband, David, in Vernon in 1976. She has been involved in various local organizations including: Vernon Community Music School, Vernon Garden Club, remedial reading program at Alexis Park, Vernon Ikebana Club, and a book club. She had a passion and talent for growing things, was a well regarded gardener and had recently earned a Master Gardener (in training) designation. In the last several years she developed a keen interest in cutting horse and English riding. She was always interested in classical music and was an accomplished pianist and oboe player. She embraced life fully and was a very giving and unpretentious person. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, David and their children: Hoadley, Adrienne (Stewart), Sarah, Angus, Kathleen and Peter, as well as her brothers Richard and Forry Angus and many in laws, nieces and nephews. A gathering celebrating her memory will be held Saturday, January 15. 2005 at 4:00 pm in the foyer of the Vernon Performing Arts Centre.
