It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Helen West in the Vernon Jubilee Hospital on Sunday, November 25th, 2007 at the age of 74 years. Helen was born in Erickson, B.C. on September 10th, 1933 to James & Emily Dodds.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Ken, to whom she was married for 55 years; her son, Larry (Joanie and daughter Erin) of Kelowna, B.C.; her daughter, Jo-Anne of Vernon, B.C.; her grandchildren, Nathan and Leslie; her Godchild, Jennifer Novak; her brother, Robert (Gwen) Dodds of Surrey, B.C.; her sisters, Mary Jean Taylor of Salmo, B.C., Irene Hamilton of Richmond, B.C. and Ruby (Gordie Wier) Anderson of Bella Coola, B.C.; extended family members, Ron (Karen) West, Tom (Terry) West and Harold West, all of Hamilton, Ontario; numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

Helen & Ken were married on August 23rd, 1952 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and continued living in Salmo, B.C. until they moved to Vernon in 1956. Helen, as a mature student, graduated from SFU in 1975 with her Teacher’s Certificate and taught in the Vernon area. Later in 1984, she established the part time business, Rainbow Souvenirs. In 1991 Helen expanded her business to West Craft Wholesale, in which she enjoyed serving crafters from all over B.C. and Alberta. She got great pleasure traveling around B.C., Alberta and Europe with either of her parents or sister, Mary Jean. Each new baby of the family and close friends received a hand knitted special item from Helen. Helen was Ken’s helper for home projects, garden and yard work. She enjoyed the flower gardens and always was seeking a new recipe to test on family members. Over the years she spent enthusiastic energy to research and record the Dodds and Nygaard Family Trees. The families appreciated her devotion and passion for providing this legacy.

Helen will always be remembered for her kindness, friendliness and caring spirit. Her highlights of volunteering were with: Girl Guides of Canada and the Trefoil Guild, being a founding member of Teens Count Too, Past Chair of the Okanagan College Advisory Committee, in which she spearheaded the scholarship committee to raise funds, member of C-Kal Radio Access, Past President of Lady Lions, Past President of the Vernon Substitute Teacher’s Association, Area Rep for ASSE International Student Exchange Program, 1992 B.C. Winter Games – food services and July 1st Celebrations (Birthday Cake).

Cremation preceded the Funeral Service which will be held at Bethel Funeral Chapel on Saturday, December 8th, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. with The Reverend Rita Harrison officiating. A Reception will follow in the Tea Room at Bethel Funeral Chapel. Interment of Helen’s cremated remains will take place at a later date in the family plot in Salmo, B.C.
