Lorraine Yvonne THOMPSON

While on a camping holiday, Lorraine died suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday, August 28th, 2008 at the age of 63 years.

Lorraine leaves behind to cherish her memory, Bob, her husband, to whom she was married for nearly 42 years; her children, Jillian, Amanda (Yuki Takeuchi), Josh (Tara Vandenborre) and by some small miracle, a dalmation, Hobbes. She will always be remembered by her siblings, Ardith, Lionel (Shannon), Bev (Bob Evans); her brother-in-law, Rick (Lynne) Thompson, and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, Laurence & Doris Larcombe; and a brother-in-law, Ivan Grant.

Lorraine trained as a Registered Nurse and nursed for many years, including her seven years living in Japan, primarily in maternity and the nursery. In later years, she taught English to new Canadians, and finally, to the present time, found great satisfaction as a home support worker. Her great love was all her volunteer activities, including her involvements in United Church Women and Grannies á Gogo. But her greatest satisfactions came from being “Mom” to literally dozens of refugee families, as they settled into their new homes in Canada, and “Gramma” to her orphan babies in Romania. Lorraine also found time for interesting discussions in her Book Club, and time for fun with her Red Hatter friends and the Trinity Drummers. She was feisty and caring, with a love that reached out widely. She showed her strong faith in ways that left the rest of us shaking our heads in wonder and admiration. As Yuki, her daughter-in-law said, “she always wanted to help others.” That giving continues, as most of her vital organs were donated to transplant recipients upon her death.

Cremation preceded a Celebration Of Lorraine’s Life which will take place at Trinity United Church on Friday, September 5th, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. with Mr. Blair Odney officiating. This is Lorraine’s celebration, so if you feel comfortable in wearing a hat as a tribute to her, please do so.

As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Lorraine to Grannies á Gogo, #15-900-43rd Avenue, Vernon, B.C. V1T 9C8 or to the Romanian Orphans Fund, c/o Trinity United Church, 3300 Alexis Park Drive, Vernon, B.C. V1T 6G8.
