Mildred E. Asling (nee Rae) passed away July 15/ 07 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was born February 21/ 33 in North York Ontario and spent her child and teen years in Goodwood and Espanola Ontario. She completed her training as a registered nurse in 1953 at Toronto East General Hospital. She started at Ajax/ Pickering General Hospital and then worked at Humber Memorial in Toronto until 1960.
She is survived by her husband Ron. They married in 1957 and they returned to Ajax in 1960 to settle and start a family. Ron & Millie have three children. She is predeceased by her eldest, Joanne Melnyk (Al – Emily, Grant) and survived by Greg Asling (Debbie – Mitchell, Morgan) and Georgia Greidanus (Aus – Sophie, Ava).
Millie set the example for caring wife, loving mother and passionate professional. She worked shifts, part time and full time balancing family commitments while studying to further her nursing career. An upright afternoon nap to grab any rest available prior to the next game, camping trip, or shift was not uncommon. In 1977 the family moved west to Fort St John, BC.. Millie continued to put her family first, but also accepted increasing responsibility at the hospital as Director of Nursing, Assistant Administrator, and Administrator until her retirement in 1996.
In retirement, Ron & Millie traveled for 11/2 years through Canada and eventually settled in 1998 in their new home in Armstrong BC.. She stayed involved in the community with the Red Cross Volunteer Service and loved working in the kitchen at the Curling Club with the Senior’s Group. She never missed an opportunity for a game of Golf in the summer or a Curling match in the winter. A quick conversation with Millie always highlighted that family, and especially the Grandchildren were her priority. She will be missed by all who knew her.
