MILDRED IRENE TAGGART, the last surviving member of the Markel children, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2003 at the Polson Extended Care Unit in Vernon, after a long struggle following a stroke. She was born on March 20, 1923 in Edmonton, Alberta and was 80 years of age. Predeceased by her first husband Alex Clark, second husband Ted Taggart in 1993, son James Clark in 1991, grandson Mark Clark in 1979 and her granddaughter Hailey Taggart in 1995, and by all her brothers and sisters. Mildred, known affectionately as ‘Millie’ to many, is survived by her children: Larry (Jan) Clark of Edmonton, Karen Latka of Vernon, Maureen (Darrell) Saumer of Claresholm, Alberta, Brent (Cathie) Taggart of Armstrong, Darryl (Lynn)Taggart of Armstrong, thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Millie moved to the Okanagan Valley in the early 1970’s. While she resided in Armstrong, she was active in bowling. Millie created lovely ceramic pieces, enjoyed gardening and was a fabulous cook. For Mildred, family was always her number one priority; she enjoyed fussing over her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and especially loved the new babies. Cremation. A family graveside service was held 2:00 p.m., On Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at the Armstrong Spallumcheen Cemetery where she was laid to rest beside her husband and granddaughter.
