Richard (Dick) Sherman, aged 74 years, passed away at Vernon on Saturday, April 21, 2007. Dick, the youngest of 10 children, was born May 7, 1932, in McAdam, New Brunswick. He worked on the railroad until enlisting in the Army in 1954, serving in Korea, Japan, Germany and Canada. In 1961 he and Marie Depree were married and lived in Ontario until moving to Burnaby in 1966, then to Lumby in 1975 when they bought the Echo Lake Resort. In 1988, the resort sold, Dick and Marie moved to Vernon. Dick worked for CN railway from 1979 until retiring in 1997. Dick was an avid athlete, as a young man he won the Light Middle Weight Commonwealth Boxing Championship in Japan, he played Senior A hardball in the Eastern US and Canada and he loved a good game of darts. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion – Lumby and Vernon branchs. In retirement his passion was the game of golf and spending time with family and friends. He will be remembered for his sense of humour, the wisdom and encouragement he so freely gave. Dick will be sadly missed by wife Marie of Vernon; son Andy (Wendy) of Lumby; daughter Christine (Darrin) of Lavington; grandchildren Bobbe, Jenny and Ryan. Also survived by his sister Kay of Massena, New York and brother Walter (Audrey) of McAdam, N.B., extended family and many friends. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2007, at 1:00 p.m., at the Community Hall, Lumby.
