Walter George Paine

PAINE, Walter George passed away peacefully on Aug. 14, 2008 at Bastion Place,

Salmon Arm, BC at age 97.

Walter was born July 9, 1911 at the family home in Harpole, England. He immigrated

to Canada in 1927 at age 16 to join his four older brothers at Drayton Valley, AB. After

working at homesteading and harvesting, he moved to Ontario where he married his

fifi rst wife, Margaret. He worked there as a landscaper at the Parliament Buildings in

Ottawa. During World War II he worked on the Alaska Highway. He lived in various

parts of Canada.

Walter was predeceased by three wives, Margaret, Evadna and Muriel also four brothers

and four sisters. He is survived by his sister Evelyn Billingham and brother Aubrey Paine

both of Harpole, England also numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and England.

Walter loved gardening, playing piano and organ, painting and the outdoors. He walked

everywhere and could often be seen at the mall chatting with anyone who had the time.

He took up painting and played honky tonk tunes on the organ where he lived at Clover

Court prior to going to Bastion Place. He participated in the outings and activities in

Bastion and was active and enjoyed people until the last week of his life.

Special thanks to the staff at Bastion Place for their loving care they gave Walter

whom they referred to as “quite a character”. Also thanks to Wendy Gosselin and

Peter Green who were there to take him on outings and for fifi sh & chips

which he loved so much.

There will be a memorial service for Walter on September 18, 2008 at

2:00 p.m. at Bastion Place. In lieu of flfl owers, memorial donations may

be made to the Recreation Department at Bastion Place.
