William Martin Hunter was born in Lakeview, Crumlin, County Antrim, Northern Ireland on April 21, 1918 and passed away peacefully at Noric House in Vernon on Friday, March 23, 2007. Aged 88 years. Martin was married to the local school teacher and love of his life Olga Stosky for 58 years. Martin is survived by his loving wife Olga and his six daughters – Sharon (Colin) Whitby, Patricia Hunter (Drew Hilts), Lynne (Mike) Bedell, Dianne Hunter (Jerry Lalonde), Debbie (George) Kunz and Kathy (David) Nelles; grandchildren Craig, Anita, Jackson, Rachel, Jenny, Becky, Johanna, Bailey, Treena, Jen, Tracy, Alisha, Stephanie, Laura and Riley; ten great-grandchildren; sister May Thompson, extended family and friends. Martin immigrated to Canada at age eleven with his parents, his brother Jim and sister May. They settled in Dawson Creek in the Peace River, cleared the land and started farming. Martin continued to farm, raising cattle and growing grain. He was active in the community as a member of the United Grain Growers, instrumental in introducing 4-H into the Dawson Creek area, served on the Dawson Creek City Council and was a member of the BC Marketing Board. Martin especially enjoyed spending time with family and his many hunting Buddies. An avid hunter, fisherman and gun collector, Martin also loved to dance and was a member of the Chix & Chux Dance Club. After retirement he and Olga spent their time travelling to Ireland, Mexico, Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, Eastern Canada and the Yukon. Martin was a great story teller who loved to embellish on a story thereby making a short story long. The family would like to thank all the staff at Noric House for the loving care provided to Martin and the support given to Olga. Memorial donations may be made to the BC Cancer Society. A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at 11:00 a.m., at the Pleasant Valley Chapel, 4303 Pleasant Valley Road, Vernon. Louise Burton officiating.
