EDITORIAL: Knock, knock, tradition calling
The spirit of the Christmas season begins unofficially tonight with the 34th annual Realtors’ Food Drive for North Okanagan food banks.
A holiday tradition that keeps on giving long past New Year’s, there’s a feel-good buzz to the event that is impossible to ignore.
Realtors and their friends go door to door and readily accept non-perishable food items from happy-to-help residents for the less fortunate at Christmas time.
The event has grown so much in scope and magnitude that it now helps stock shelves in food banks in Greater Vernon, Armstrong, Enderby and Lumby for months to come.
“The support from the realtors and the community is fantastic,” exclaimed Ben Winters, Lumby Food Bank co-ordinator, and who has been echoed by representatives in the other communities.
Everyone involved should take a bow for not only helping feed the less fortunate but also taking part in an event that truly taps into the sense of community and generosity at its best.
And for most of us it’s so simple. Just be prepared tonight with a bag or two of food donations, check the story on page A5 for desired items, and hand it over to the canvassers when they ring the doorbell.
Or even easier. Just put the food together and leave it on your well-lit front step and let the magic happen. And if for some reason the canvassers don’t make it your particular door then feel free to call any local real estate office and someone will pick up your donation.
Thanks to everyone involved and merry Christmas to all who have made this so successful for 34 years and counting.
