Bears and garbage

In the Aug. 25 Morning Star, I read an article, as well as an editorial, about bears being seen in Vernon and other communities, scavenging for food in human garbage.

In the Aug. 25 Morning Star, I read an article, as well as an editorial, about bears being seen in Vernon and other communities, scavenging for food in human garbage.

Bears are now bulking up for the winter ahead and taking advantage of easy food.

Residents are reminded to use bear-proof trash containers or keep garbage secured in the house or shed until pickup day.

Recently, driving into Vernon on Highway 97 past the vehicle pullout and old north tourist Information office, I happened to glance sideways and saw one large garbage can stuffed full of garbage bags, overflowing and surrounding the can on the ground.

I’m sure, not all of those garbage bags would contain food.

But, what an example to set for others.
