On behalf of the John Howard Society, we would like to write this letter thanking the City of Vernon for its response to the very complex issue of homelessness.

Whether we respond from compassion and empathy, or anger and frustration, or a combination of all these emotions, there is agreement in our community.

It is not OK for people to be forced to sleep outside in our parks with no where else to go.

As a community and a province, this needs to be resolved.

Vernon city council has given huge consideration to this problem, and despite limited resources and mandate, is working closely with stakeholders to find solutions.

In particular, we would like to thank Coun. Juliette Cunningham for her ongoing volunteer commitment to the COOL Team and for taking the time to meet and talk with people who are homeless.

In our most recent homeless survey, 76 per cent of people indicated that they grew up in the North Okanagan or have family in the area.

The majority of people on the streets have lived in Vernon for more than a year.

These are people who are connected to our community. We are working together to bring them inside and provide supported housing.

Many thanks to city staff and city council for their support of the non-profit sector and ongoing efforts to bring affordable housing to Vernon.
