Neighbourhood Park

With reference to your article, Fishy smell in town, Sept. 6, the plans for and the completion of the park in question was the work of the indefatigable, Patrick Nicol and was named at the time of opening, The Neighbourhood Park.

For many years, there was a summer cottage on this property, long abandoned. Though Patrick Nicol, the City of Vernon bought the land, tore down the building and built the park, leaving many of the wild rose bushes, Virginia creeper, and mature trees and of course BX Creek edging it. For many years, neighbouring residential owners planted drifts of wild flowers in the park.

Although it was frequently visited and used for an hour or two of peaceful retreat, Vernon Parks and Recreation neglected it, leaving it to become dark and overgrown. It is true, there are some visitors who still use the park bench to quietly read a book over the lunch hour.
