Save the BX ranchland

A group of concerned citizens has formed a committee to request that the Regional District of the North Okanagan postpone the sale of the remainder of 55.5 hectares (137.1 acres) of the property known as BX ranchland, located at 4122 East Vernon Rd. This valuable land resource is strategically located adjacent to the City of Vernon’s East Hill neighbourhood. Members of this committee would like to hear from you the taxpayer, before this land is sold back to private hands.

At the present time, this ranchland is farmed under lease at no cost to the taxpayer. This can continue until a community based land use decision is made.

We are looking for organizations that would have an interest in maintaining a community agricultural use for this property.

An agricultural park could be established in the future in partnership with groups such as Young Agrarians (youngagrarians.org), producer groups, community groups, local schools, colleges or universities.

Our common interest is in preserving public greenspace on an urban boundary. This can help us work towards future food safety and security for the North Okanagan.

We understand that there are community pressures to purchase land for parks in other neighbourhoods.

With the current price of real estate in this area, what could be afforded would not come close to equalling the potential of this property in size, accessibility and value as a public green space.

An agricultural park on this site would benefit the entire area, city and rural residents alike. The opportunity to keep such a large and unique property in such an ideal and central location will never come again.

Please join us in urging our local and regional governments to maintain public ownership and local control over this irreplaceable asset, the BX ranchland.
