Sharks shut out Kelowna

The Vernon Seed Orchard Bantam Sharks defeated Kelowna 3-0 in an all-girls hockey battle Saturday at Civic Arena.

Kelowna came out strong in the first 10 minutes, peppering goalie Bailey Berndt with several shots. Nikala Debalinhard and Selena Bridge-Hanson anchored the defence, covering loose players and clearing rebounds.

Vernon took control of the game at the end of the first period when Chelsea McCaig started some great passing plays and Brooke Berube, Erin Poland Molly Crandlemire and Taylor Cousins forechecked to keep Kelowna pinned in their end.

The Sharks’ hard work was rewarded at 4:15 in the second when Cailee Bauml stripped a Kelowna defender and made a perfect pass to Hannah Scherck, who one-timed the puck to the far side for the Sharks’ first goal of the season.

Just two minutes later, Brittany Jackson took a quick shot and her rebound came to Taylor Vandale, who used quick hands to tuck the puck into the side of the net.

The Sharks kept pressing in the third period and the usually defensive-minded Hannah Swift picked up a loose puck inside the blueline and ripped a wrist shot from the high slot five-hole.

Kelowna put on a huge push to break the shut out, but Berndt stood tall as she earned her first career shutout.

The Sharks are 1-2 in exhibition action.

Meanwhile, the Pee Wee Lakers girls stopped Williams Lake 6-0 and 5-0 in exhibition weekend action at Civic.

Kendra Ostafie scored the first goal Saturday with Courtney Graves and Andie Kaneda earning assists. Kaneda finished with the hat trick, while Mairyn Tucker converted from Carly Southam.

Cassidy Marshall, Jordan Butler and Makenna Southam also supplied helpers.

On Sunday, Ostafie again opened the Laker offence with Marshall and Makenna Southam assisting. Kaneda, from Chelsea Marshall and Amy-Rae Fox, made it 2-0.

Emily Clarke then clicked with Fox and Carly Southam assisting. Tucker added the final two goals with Clarke and Ailish Curran drawing assists.

Samantha Head was amazing in the Vernon net for both games.
