Heath hustles Kuhn in five ends
A stocking full of doubles sent Darren Heath’s Canwest Propane into the Baron Insurance Super League’s Christmas break with a little extra holiday cheer Wednesday night.
Heath counted doubles in the first, third and fifth ends en route to a fifth-end 7-1 stoppage of Robbi Kuhn’s North Enderby Timber at the Vernon Curling Club.
League-leading Canwest (9-3) used a hit-and-stick for its deuce in three. Kuhn (6-6) had the gas men in trouble in four, laying three, but Canwest third Dave Merklinger set up a single steal with a nice double.
A well-played fifth end by Canwest led to handshakes.
Jim Cotter’s Woodland Equipment parlayed a big first-end steal into an early night, waxing Darrell (Heavy D) Houston’s Nufloors 8-0 in just four ends.
Houston, now 6-6, narrowly missed a long run-back in one, allowing for the steal.
Cotter, alone in second at 8-4, continued thieving points with a single in two and triple in three.
Mark Longworth’s Sladen Moore outlasted Sherry Heath’s De Vine Vintners 6-4 in a back-and-forth battle.
A missed hit by Vintner skip Sandra Jenkins led to a steal of two for Longworth (6-6) in the first end. Jenkins responded with a flawless second end to equalize, and then traded singles to leave it 3-3 at the break.
Down by one heading into six, the 1-11 De Vine crew got a little greedy and ended up surrendering a deuce.
Longworth held Heath to a single by loading the house in seven, and used the hammer to eke out the win in eight.
