Racers medal at Sun Peaks
Vernon Ski Club racers battled -20 C weather as they competed in the Teck Giant Slalom recently at Sun Peaks.
Following a best-of-three runs format, Makena Kersey collected silver in the Under 12 Girls division, while Gerrit van Soest, Caele Kassa and Braden Kersey placed fourth, fifth and sixth respectively in the U12 Boys group.
Katrina van Soest bagged silver in the U14 Girls class, with Sarah Macgillivray earning sixth, Rowena Dunlop 10th, Keila Anderson 16th and Robin deWet 21st.
In the U14 Boys, Gavin Donald secured silver, Christopher Richardson banked bronze, Anton Youngberg was fourth, Jaden Parsons was seventh, Langdon Kersey ninth, Ethan Clancy 19th and Antony deWet 21st.
The U14 team is coached by Ian Chernencoff and Kandace Kriese.
Scout McWilliams and Ravi Vliet shared second in the U16 Girls, while Holly Clancy nabbed 14th and Erin Loukras 20th.
U16 Boys action saw Matthew Kreutz grab silver, with Taylor Clark and Liam McGrath finishing 14th and 15th respectively.
The Vernon Ski Club has had a huge spike in enrollment this season, with nearly 150 racers from ages six to 17 competing in a combination of all-mountain and race programs. The club will host more than 200 competitors in the Teck U14 provincials, March 29-31, at Silver Star.
Meanwhile, Youngberg, Donald, Katrina van Soest, Parsons, Langdon Kersey and Richardson have all qualified for U14 CanAm Westerns at Kananaskis.
