Canada 2-0 in Russia
Team Canada got off to an 2-0 start at the World Wheelchair Curling Championships Saturday in Sochi, Russia.
The Canadians, featuring Armstrong’s Ina Forrest at second, and Vernon’s Sonja Gaudet at lead, opened the 10-team spiel with a 7-1 win over South Korea in the morning draw.
Leading 2-1 after five ends, Canada burgled a deuce in six, followed by a triple in seven to seal the win.
Canada counted a four-ender in six en route to an 8-3 win over Scotland in their afternoon draw Saturday.
Skipped by Jim Armstrong, and with Dennis Thiessen at third, Canada continues play today against Russia. Games are being played at in the Ice Cube Curling Centre (2014 Olympic venue).
Canada finished seventh last year after winning the event two years ago in Prague. The round-robin wraps up Thursday, with tiebreakers, if necessary, going Friday. The championship game is slated for Saturday.
