The Vernon Vortex Speed Skating club hosted the Okanagan FUNale competition Saturday at Kal Tire Place.

On hand to start the first race was local MLA Eric Foster who did a commendable job in his first crack at the starter’s pistol. Local coach Tony Benn served as the chief referee, helping many of the younger participants prepare for, what for many was, their first racing experience. Benn did a great job in ensuring that it was a positive day for all.

The Vortex cruised through most of the races, accumulating a total of 16 personal best times. Daniel Hall, Mattias Isobe, Nathan Stewart, and Tadhg Boyle each recorded three best times, while Nate Benn notched two and Laura Hall and Lauren Miller each recorded one best time.

Charlie McGinty was well on his way to a couple best times but travelling at speeds well beyond his comfort level in preparation for the upcoming provincials led to a few spectacular crashes which he somehow emerged from unscathed.

The Vortex are now undertaking preparations for the provincials, March 4-5, in Abbotsford.

The playdowns will serve as a selection meet for the Western Canadian Championships in Saskatoon in mid-March.

Vernon should have a record number of athletes at the Western Canadian finals.

The Vortex carry sponsorship from Interior Savings, Mackenzie Financial and Manulife. Information about joining this team can be found at www.vernonspeedskatingclub.com.
