Sue Barss was a rock star in net as Vernon Liquor Store VQA grounded Shuswap Kaos 1-0 in North Okanagan Women’s Soccer Association Masters Division play Tuesday night at Marshall Field.

Barss, like Mission Hill wine, seems to be getting better with age. She received major props from veteran fullback Shelly Johnston.

“Sue was amazing in the net with her keen sense of defensiveness,” said Johnston. “She anticipated the shots before they happened. She also received the coaches award as player of the month for July.”

The only goal of the scorching night came in the last few minutes from Ginger Nickoli off a beauty cross from Harmony Crockett. Gail Atha ducked to allow the ball to move over her head to the anxious Nickoli.

VQA received extreme play from sweeper Leah Willinger and excellent control and transition plays in the midfield by Vicki Ryan.

In other Masters play, the Chick Kickers ambushed Courtesy Motors Sistas 9-1 with both sides only fielding eight players.

Jen Kemper pulled a hat trick for the Chick Kickers, who flourished with head coach Gary Dill away fishing. Kemper moved to defence for half the game but was still dangerous all night.

Tania Sladen and Jessica Tanner each added two goals, while Joanne Lockhart buried a sweet cross into the corner of the net. Wendy Magnus received a beautiful pass from Steph Curtis and deked the keeper goalie to record a rare goal. Marilyn Vanderdeen had a strong showing in her first go as a forward. As usual, Robyn Sherwood was stellar in net, turning away the Sistas shots time after time.

AJ Acura scored three times as the Infonews.ca Newshounds grounded the Do Itt Drywallers 8-1 in Division 1 play Tuesday night at MacDonald Park.

It was 3-0 Newhounds by the sixth minute with Acura converting in the second minute from Kira Lee and Jasmine Whitling. Lee connected a minute later, from Kelsey Pedro, while Megan Prentice buried the three-spot goal from Tara Lee Smith.

Shortly after, Acura broke loose for goals two minutes apart, one on a long through ball from Lee and her hat trick snipe from Emily Salustro.

Janessa Moore responded for the Drywallers in the 17th minute to close the first-half offence.

Pedro finished a wicked give-and-go with Whitling at 55 minutes, while Pedro clicked seven minutes later from Lee. Prentice counted a 35-yard corker at 67 minutes to finish the attack.

Rosters Sports Club and Shuswap Merlot ran to a 2-2 draw at Blackburn Park in Salmon Arm.

Monica Jatel headed in a Jennifer Poulin corner for the first Rosters goal, while Michelle Connolly knocked in a Daralee Morris feed for the other tally. The Merlot equalized in the dying minutes.

North Enderby Timber toppled the Blazers 6-2. No results were reported.
