Cotters 1-1 at Canadian Mixed Doubles

Jim and Jaelyn Cotter of Vernon were 1-1 heading into Thursday night play in the Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championshiops at the Nutana Curling Club at Saskatoon.

The Cotter father-daughter combination bowed 9-4 to Shawn and Katie Cottrill of Listowel, Ont. Thursday morning after opening the 32-team extravaganza with s 9-3 shelling of Mackenzie Schwartz and Sam Willis of Lumsden, Sask.

The Vernon twosome met Ryan Dels and Sherry Just of Fox Valley, Sask. in the Thursday night draw and face two games Friday: against Catlin Schneider and Nancy Martin of Saskatoon and Newfoundland’s Ryan and Sarah Lamswood. The Cotters finish the round-robin Saturday morning versus Chelsea Carey and Colin Hodgson of Calgary.

Olympic gold-medallists, world champions, Scotties and Tim Hortons Brier winners are competing in the five-day event, which is raising excitement levels for mixed doubles making its debut as a medal sport at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.

The pool winners plus the next best eight teams based on W-L records regardless of pool advance to the championship round.

For the playoffs, the four pool winners will be seeded and receive byes to the quarter finals on Sunday at 9 a.m. (all times MDT), while the eight other teams battle at 8 p.m. on Saturday to determine the other four quarter finalists.

The quarterfinal winners meet in semifinals Sunday at noon.

The winning team will not only represent Canada at the 2017 World Mixed Doubles Championship, April 22-29 at Lethbridge, Alta. (held in conjunction with the World Seniors) but also earns $5,100 for the win.

In addition, the top three finishers will receive an entry into the 2018 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials, Jan. 2-7 (at a site to be announced), which will determine Canada’s team for the Mixed Doubles competition in the 2018 Winter Olympics, should Canada qualify for the Olympics.
