He’s not among the overall champions, but Ernie Cherkowski grabbed a bit of the spotlight.

Competing in the Vernon Golf and Country Club’s junior and senior club championships on the weekend, Cherkowski – a retired Vernon school teacher – carded the seventh hole in one of his golfing career.

Cherkowski aced the par-3, 168-yard 17th hole Sunday with a seven iron, on his way to finishing with a 36-hole low net score of 138, good for first low net in the second flight.

“I wanted to hit a draw shot and tried to play it to the front of the green, because that’s where the pin was,” said Cherkowski, 75. “I hit it really well. It landed just on the green and trickled in, the little bugger.”

It was Cherkowski’s sixth hole on his home course and his first on No. 17. The other five – the first coming 19 years ago, at age 56 – came on holes No. 5 and No. 14. One ace came in Thailand, where his son, Kelly, works.

Graydon Brown, Tim Ouellette, Ryley Johnson and Kendra Jones-Munk were crowned club champions for 2017.
