The undefeated South Kamloops Titans used a monster second half to ground the Fulton Maroons 31-3 in Okanagan Conference junior varsity football Wednesday at Grahame Park.
The 6-0 Titans could only muster a field goal in the opening half against the 3-3 Maroons before going bonkers in the final half, outscoring Fulton 28-0. Hayden Catt booted a 26-yard field goal for Fulton in the first quarter.
Quarterback Quin Williamson completed five of eight passes for 40 yards and one interception. Williamson was third in the conference with a passing rate of 41.1. VSS Panthers’ Zack Smith was first at 70.7 per cent and 15 touchdowns.
Williamson carried the ball 11 times for 90 yards, while Reyann Siddique caught eight passes for 42 yards and Ethan Schiman rang up 32 yards on four receptions.
Quaid Willett pocketed eight tackles to lead the Maroons, who got seven from Seth Pallister and six from Van Kozak. Williamson and Liam Gombrich each earned five and Pallister recorded one pick.
“We played a really good football game until halftime,” said Fulton head coach Mike Scheller. “Our offence moved the ball well. We just had trouble making plays in the red zone. Defensively, we tackled well and were aggressive. Our linebacker unit was very solid and we stopped their rush attack. We really played a solid first half and I was happy with the way our kids performed. The second half was a different story. We got tired and SKSS began to wear us down. They have a very fast tailback and once he got rolling, he scored on some long runs.”
The Maroons lost some key starters to injuries in the second half and lacked the depth and size to overcome those losses. Scheller gave major props to Gombrich, Williamson, Schiman and Seiji Bott for “standout season.”
Added Scheller: “Overall, it was a very good season for our jayvee program. We had a bunch of kids who had never played football before and they improved a ton. They were a great group to coach and they picked up the game fast. They worked hard and turned themselves into football players. We had a good season. I would really like to thank jayvee coaches Dave Hobbs and Kevin Stecyk for all the work they put into our program for the 2017 season. They donate a ton of hours.”
