Vernon United Tolko Coldstream Lumber U13 Girls struck silver in the Okanagan Youth Soccer Ice Breaker Easter Sunday at Beasley Park in Lake Country, falling 1-0 to Kamloops Blaze Orange.

Kamloops managed their goal midway through the first half and their keeper stymied Vernon’s offence all day with Tolko’s defence holding off the Blaze in the final 45 minutes. Vernon keeper Jordyn Kisilevich shone in the final and throughout the tournament for all-round MVP.

The Tolko crew drew 2-2 with Cowichan Valley United in their tourney opener, getting goals in the first 10 minutes by Skylee Sigurdson-Poirier, set up on a beautiful pass from Madison Bergman, and another by game MVP Ava Proctor with the help of Kaitlyn Budgen.

Cowichan answered on a penalty shot and snuck another one past Kisilevich before the end of the half. Vernon unleashed a multitude of shots after Cowichan levelled the score but couldn’t finish.

Vernon then battled the Nelson Selects to a scoreless draw with Mia Hyer being named MVP for both her offensive and defensive prowess.

Vernon spotted Calgary McKenzie United an early lead before posting a 2-1 win to reach the gold-medal tilt.

Brooklyn Kineshanko entered the game and promptly scored a goal off of a rebound from the opposing goalie just before the break. Tolko converted midway through the second half after an onslaught of shots with Sigurdson-Poirier burying a rebound. MVP was Nadia Nelson-Shah.

Vernon Tolko United U12 girls, had a solid Okanagan Youth Soccer Ice Breaker on Easter Weekend at Beasley Park in Lake Country, winning two of three matches.

United, under coaches Colin Clarke and Cory Hoard, lost 2-0 to Kelowna United Friday afternoon despite enjoying multiple scoring chances. Lauren Hoard and Makenna Doyle were fantastic in net and Aimee Skinner, Abby Lawlor and Kristen Francks controlled the ball and took numerous shots and made some excellent plays. Macy Blades was slick in midfield and Joelle Kohtala and Sadie Christensen shone on defense. MVP was central fullback Tori Maltman for great shut-down play.

Game 2 on Saturday was won 3-1 by the Vernon girls with Lawlor sinking two goals and Francks adding a single. McKenna Doyle was a wall in net, pocketing MVP. Paige Cover and Kirsten Brown made some fantastic passes.

Vernon brushed back Nelson 2-1 in their last game Sunday, getting offence from Francks and Maltman, off of a beautiful corner by game MVP Kohtala.

Jordan Clarke, Blades and Lawlor controlled the ball, while Skinner dominated in the middle. Tournament MVP was Maltman.

Vernon United Tolko U11 Girls (Team M) fell 6-1 to the MUSC Calgary Spurs Saturday afternoon.

Hailey Olney and Camryn Steele defended a corner and Lauren Cunningham swiped the ball at midfield and enjoyed a solid attempt on net after a give-and-go with Sophie Challen.

Calgary scored first and their strong offensive play kept Vernon actively defending their goal until Davy Dornoi won a tough battle on the sideline to win the ball and feed Olivia Henderson (13) for another shot at goal.

Stellar defensive pressure from Brinley Magee, Sydney Lewis and Jamie Soon opened the midfield and kept Calgary in check in the second half. Elizabeth Wright and Madison Vranesic worked hard in the right corner to move the ball up field. Ava Cesario passed back to Taylor Stewart, whose corker from the 18 levelled the score. Game MVP was Challen.

United opened by shading the Kelowna Lions 1-0 with Cesario breaking down the right flank, beating a defender and sending a cross to Henderson, who parlayed across to a wide open Olney for a late first-half goal.

The Lions struggled to get past midfield in the second half as Stewart, Magee and Soon were dynamic defensively. Camryn Steele unleashed a few more howitzers on net to test the Kelowna keeper. MVP was Olney.

It was a cold start as United #1 and United #2 Under 11s both endured a frost delay to their 8 a.m. start in Friday in Lake Country with United #2 winning a thriller, 4-3.

Action was end-to-end from the start with Aimee Glasser opening the scoring for United #2 in the third minute after having been sent in all alone on a beautiful feed from Rylee Mairs. Holly Magnus put United #2 up 2-0 at 10 minutes on yet another breakaway after getting in behind United #1 defenders and slipping it past the keeper.

United #1 answered in the 16th minute as Sydney Lewis used some trickery of foot to get through three United #2 defenders and bury a kick from just inside the box. Olney tied the game on a nice cross from Lewis two minutes later.

United #2 forced keeper Davy Hornoi to make a big save in the 20th minute and scramble to scoop up the rebound to prevent a sure goal. Shortly after, United #2 took the lead on a spectacular goal by Cesario on another assist from Lewis.

Lauren Cooke evened things on a monster kick that United #1 keeper Alanna Wellington got a piece of before it crossed the line. United #2 keeper Samantha Vajda recorded multiple miraculous recovery saves to keep the match close in the opening half.

The second half was all United #2 in the early going but they couldn’t solve Wellington, who made save after save on Grade A chances. In the fifth minute, the show belonged to United #1 defender Taylor Stewart, who came out of nowhere to foil a glorious United #2 chance from inside the 18 to keep the game tied. Eight minutes later, United #2 midfielder Ella Garrod sent Jennie Pereboom in alone on a touch pass only to have Wellington make yet another great play stealing the ball and getting it free from danger. United #2 finally solved Wellington when Magnus converted just inside the post.

United #2 tried to add to their total when a streaking Garrod was forced out on the sidelines by an aggressive defensive play from United #1’s Madison Vranesic. This strong play seemed to tilt the field in favour of United #1 as they held the play and pressured for the equalizer through the final three minutes but it was Marrah Wilford-Kaleikini who shut the door in the United #2 goal until the final whistle.
