Vandenbrand, Wilson boost Bruisers

The Brenden Robertson Construction Burgundy Bruisers showed why they will be going into the playoffs as the top seed after a 12-7 Mosquito baseball win over the Hytec Red Sox Tuesday night at Lakeview Park.

Jesse Vandenbrand doubled on a 3-1 count in the first inning to drive in two runs for the 11-3-2 Bruisers. The Red Sox (12-6) tied it when Dominic Meyer smacked a two-run double.

The Bruisers took the lead adding two runs in the second on singles by Charlie Swartz and Bryce Cormie and solid pitching from Jonah Lee held the Red Sox scoreless in the bottom of the second. Lee pitched two innings, striking out three.

Mark Johnson drove in four Bruiser runs in the top of the third after a line drive to centre and scored on a a throwing error. Johnson also had an outstanding day on the mound striking out five.

The Red Sox started a rally in the fifth, putting up three runs with a single by Everett Sidwell. The Red Sox are the No. 2 seed in the playoff tournament next week.

Hytec upended the Hi Pro Sportswear Blackhawks 16-6 Monday night, starting off with a bang after Mason Swinburne’s drive to deep right centre ended as a two-run inside-the-park home run.

Solid pitching from Sidwell in the first and Devon Gregoire-Gabriel in the second kept Hytec up 4-1 after two innings. The Red Sox tacked on four more in the third with singles by Liam Reid and Deklen McDonald.

The Blackhawks would not go quietly though and put up four runs in the bottom of the third. Aiden Halcro, Tyson Wicklund and Isaac Brisco all had two-hit days for the Blackhawks. The Red Sox added four runs in the fourth and fifth. Gavin Johnson added two hits for the Red Sox and Vincent Sanfilippo walked three times but stole five bases.

The Associated Ready Mix Green Machines outslugged the Sun Dial Strikin’ Lightning 13-12 with a walk-off triple in the bottom of the sixth, in other Monday action.

Sun Dial scored two in each of the first two innings with Allandra Dolinski, Jakob Holliday, Ivan Schmidt and Ryan James each crossing the plate.

The Green Machines answered with four runs as Quinn Maglio singled and drove in Seth Poulin and Kiera Horton in the first and Evan Kashuba doubled and drove in Owen Turnbull and Nolan Wilson in the second.

The Green Machines’ Drayden Routley kept the Bolts to two runs in the third with Reid Williamson and Chase Lepore each singling and knocking in one run each.

The Green Machines offence continued in the bottom of the third as Chayse Brumpton doubled in Pierce Beuaregard and scored on Koen Holmes’ single. Holmes and Poulin also scored in the third to put the Green Machines up by two.

Ivan Schmidt and Ryan James scored for the Bolts in the fourth as Owen Turnbull struck out two. The Green Machines came out hitting again in the fourth as Simon Turnbull and Evan Kashuba both singled and drove in two runs.

The Bolts’ bats woke up in the fifth as Mike Huss and Williamson each doubled, drove in a run and scored and then Lepore singled and drove in a run. Holmes battled hard and struck out the last three Bolts he faced.

Ryan James pitched a gem as he struck out all three Green Machine batters he faced.

In the final inning, Austin Wylie scored on a single by Huss to level the score. In the bottom of the sixth, Horton walked, Routley doubled and Maglio hit an infield single to load the bases and Turnbull hit a walk-off triple to the fence.

The Green Machines grounded the Kal Rotary Kodiaks 16-11 with Brumpton striking out two of three batters in the final inning for the win.

The Kodiaks were led in the first three innings by Carter Davidson who scored twice, Damon Golz with two RBI, Maddex Macalvary with two walks and two runs and Carter Gillman and Braxton Tessman each with one RBI.

The Green Machines answered with Horton walking and scoring twice, Owen Turnbull singling and scoring once and Brumpton walking, singling and scoring twice. Nolan Wilson, Kashuba and Holmes each supplied RBI singles.

The Green Machines broke it open with Kashuba leading the inning with an inside-the-park dinger down the left field line, followed by Beauregard, Simon Turnbull and Holmes also crossing the plate.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Rotary gang got singles and runs from Damon Golz and Hayden Tessman, while Tessman got on base after he hit a ground ball back to the hill that took a bad bounce and hit Brumpton on the cheek.

In other games, the Kodiaks dispatched the Five Star Awards Jays 13-8 Tuesday night after stopping the Mavericks 13-7 last week. No details were provided.
