Vees earn weekend split with Vipers

Sam Mellor fired the winner on a late first-period powerplay as the Penticton Vees outlasted the Vernon Vipers 3-1 in B.C. Hockey League action Saturday night at Wesbild Centre.

Vernon opened the scoring on the man advantage midway through the first period as Adam Tambellini unloaded from the top of the right circle to beat netminder Chad Katunar.

The Vees' Cam Amantea equalized less than three minutes later, roofing a shot from in close on Austin Smith. Sean Flanagan set up the tally with a great solo effort, stickhandling past a few Vipers before dishing to Amantea.

Katunar recorded 26 saves for the win. Smith had 29 stops for the Snakes.

The Vipers visit the West Kelowna Warriors Friday at Royal LePage Place.
