Sean Flanagan wired a beauty post-and-in blast for the winner in the second period as the Penticton Vees held off the Vernon Vipers 3-1 in B.C. Hockey League play Friday night at Wesbild Centre.
Wade Murphy scored two minutes before the second intermission to extend the first-place Vees' lead. Travis Blanleil opened the visitors' account on a shorthanded breakaway in the first period.
Pearce Eviston answered for Vernon midway through the second period, regaining his own turnover in Penticton's zone and outwaiting netminder Chad Katunar to find the open net.
The 6-foot-5 Katunar made 30 stops for his league-leading 17th win (he is tied with Chilliwack's Mitch Gillam). Austin Smith was steady in recording 26 stops for Vernon.
Vernon visits the Trail Smoke Eaters Saturday at Cominco Arena. The Smokies earned their fourth straight win Friday night, icing the host West Kelowna Warriors 4-3 in overtime at Royal LePage Place.
