Community driven radio station looking to power the tower in Vernon

97.9 Valley FM has until September to purchase a radio transmitter

A local radio station in the Vernon community is seeking the public’s help in getting it to be broadcasted across the Greater Vernon area.

Valley FM is a locally-focused radio station aimed around news, music, and interviews.

Back in 2017, a group of locals saw a need for a community radio station in Vernon and began working toward that goal, forming the Vernon Community Radio Society, a non-profit, board-governed group that established 97.9 FM.

In 2020, the Canadian Radio Telecommunication Commission (CRTC) approved the frequency, 97.9 FM, and the station has been working since then to get it on air full time.

“We are asking for everyone’s help to ‘Power the Tower’ and get 97.9 Valley FM on the air,” said the society’s president, Garry Molitwenik. “We need to purchase, install, and maintain a radio transmitter on our radio tower, so we can complete the dream of having a locally focused community radio station on air for our city.”

The CRTC set a deadline of Sept. 1, 2024 for the purchase of the transmitter. Molitwenik added that “all donations are appreciated and needed to take us forward and establish us on the airwaves of our city.”

To stream the station live, visit valleyfm.ca. Donations to the station can be made, via PayPal at their website.
