The City of Vernon’s community development division has released year-to-date statistics for various applications.

“The application numbers are on par with the same time period last year, with 404 applications within the first two quarters of both years,” said Carie Liefke, planning assistant, in a report.

The value of building permits within the first two quarters of 2014 is slightly higher than 2013 ($24.2 million vs $20 million) despite the fact that the number of permits is slightly less at 150 compared 155 permits.

The value of $6.4 million for the commercial, industrial, and institutional renovation category surpassed the new construction category which is at $0.6 million.

The value of new home construction at $14.7 million exceeded the value of every other category of building permit type. The closest category was commercial renovations at $4.2 million.

“If the number of permits submitted and the construction value remain steady for the remainder of the year, 2014 would surpass the 2013 year-end totals,” said Liefke.

Specifically for the second quarter of 2014, there was a decrease in the total number of planning applications in comparison to 2013 (36 vs 48).

“This decrease is also reflected in the year to date applications.,” said Liefke.

“Development permits are the most common type of permit received.”

There was an increase in the number of miscellaneous applications received (103 compared to 92) in the second quarter of 2014.

“The majority of miscellaneous permits received were for sign permits,” said Liefke.
