Addiction support proceeds

An overwhelming turnout to a presentation from a father sharing the struggles he faced loving his drug-addicted son, has prompted action.

Accompanied by his wife, Tim Varga recently made a public presentation at Vernon Secondary called Loving Your Kids To A Fault – Parents, Don’t Enable Your Child.

“Not knowing what response or attendance we would get, we were quite overwhelmed when over 120 people attended,” said Varga, who thanks the Vernon School District for allowing the presentation to take place.

“During our question and answer session at the end, we discussed the need for some sort of support group in our community, as many felt that there was not many options to help those who are suffering through their loved one’s addictions.”

As a result, plans are in the works to establish a group locally, with the first meeting taking place Thursday. The group will be called Victims of Addiction: Family Support Group.

“Based on the number of people who showed up at VSS that night we feel that there would be a fairly large group that would attend,” said Varga.

Meetings are expected to continue monthly, unless there is a demand for more.
