A Vernon duo is about to make history on Vancouver Island.
Sheila and Karly Sovereign, aka “The Sovereign Duo,” will be the first aunt and niece to ever compete in the Atmosphere Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race (MOMAR), set to take place in Cumberland, in the Comox Valley, this Saturday.
Around 400 racers and volunteers will be heading to Cumberland for the event.
“The Sovereign Duo will be the MOMAR’s first team consisting of aunt and niece. We love it that the MOMAR brings together family members who share the same passions,” said race director Bryan Tasaka. “Typically, team members inspire each other to do the best they can, which can be a great relationship-building exercise.”
The majority of racers will be travelling to Cumberland from cities and towns throughout B.C., across Canada and the U.S.A., and from as far away as Spain.
The Atmosphere Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race Series (MOMAR), one of Canada’s most popular adventure race series, is a one-day event that challenges the bodies and minds of racers over 30 - 50 kilometres of rugged and visually stunning West Coast terrain.
It features the multi-sport disciplines of mountain biking, trail running, orienteering and kayaking. Competitors race solo, or in teams of two or four.
In addition to their typical 50 km sprint race, MOMAR offers a short course that will provide less seasoned racers with an opportunity to participate in a world-class adventure race.
Both the enduro (50 km) course and short (30 km) course will include mountain biking, kayaking, trail running, orienteering, and bushwhacking.
The finish line will be located at the Cumberland Lake Park Campground from 1-5 p.m.
Participating in a MOMAR, either as a racer or volunteer, means supporting MOMAR’s official charity, the Make-a-Wish Foundation. More information on racing, volunteering, MOMAR training clinics and their official charity is available at www.mindovermountain.com/momar or call 1-866-912-3331.
