Bike week activities abound in Vernon

Several events are planned to get people reconsidering their commute to work and school.

The City of Vernon is reminding residents that this year’s Bike to Work and School Week is from Monday to June 5.

Several events are planned to get people reconsidering their commute to work and school.

Today and Thursday: The campaign begins with four secondary schools — Clarence Fulton, Kalamalka, Vernon (VSS) and W.L. Seaton—competing to have the greatest percentage of students cycling to school. The VSS event begins at 11:25 a.m. May 25 and the Seaton event starts at 11:25 a.m. May 26.

Monday: Vernon Mayor Akbal Mund will lead a celebration ride with local celebrities and Ellison Elementary students from Ellison school to Polson Park. Kiki the Eco Elf will provide entertainment at Polson Park. All cyclists are invited to attend a community celebration station from 6:45 to 9:30 a.m. at Ellison elementary.

Tuesday, June 2 and 3: Three elementary schools will host Bike to School celebration stations from 7:45 a.m. until the bell rings: Alexis Park May 31, Harwood June 2 and Beairsto June 3.

June 1: Sun Country Cycle will host a midweek celebration station from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m., with a free continental breakfast sponsored by CUPE 626 and Starbucks Coffee.

June 3: Wrap up Bike to Work and School Week with a free barbecue at Spirit Square beside city hall. This is a final chance to win prizes and enjoy entertainment by Tanya Lipscomb and the Vernon Community Band.

There is still time to register as a rider or a team leader for this year’s Bike to Work and School Week. To register online or for more information about the event, visit www.biketowork.ca.
