Cowboys round up memories

It was a day to celebrate cowboys and birthdays.

It was a day to celebrate cowboys and birthdays.

Cowboy Norm Mansell got a one-of-a-kind 90th birthday gift Sept. 7.

His son-in-law, Bob Diehl, who turned 60 Sept. 1, brought along his quarter horse, Ford Truck, who was 30 on Aug. 27, to Polson Extended Care in Vernon where Mansell now lives.

Diehl was pleased to visit with Mansell and his old rodeo buddy, Tim Alexis, long-time owner of the Diamond T Ranch on Westside Road.

“We won some buckles together,” said Diehl, who was wearing one of the rodeo buckles, along with full gear.

“I said that one day I was going to bring my horse for a visit. I don’t know if they believed me but seemed like a good birthday present and something that everyone could enjoy. It’s great to see the guys out with their cowboy hats.”

Many other Polson Extended Care residents, including bronc rider and rodeo clown, Jesse Rutt, were out in the sunny morning to see the horse.

They reminisced about when many of them grew up on the farm with horses.

“It’s a good present,” said Mansell, a cowboy and rancher who is originally from Saskatchewan.
