Female high school students got the chance to sample a variety of trades programs during the Okanagan College Vernon campus' first Jill of all Trades day Nov. 22, 2024.

Female students have a chance to try their hand at potential careers with Jill of All Trades.

The day-long event aims to inspire young women in Grades 9-12 to pursue education and careers in skilled trades and apprenticeship.

The event takes place May 22 at Okanagan College's Kelowna Trades campus, but spaces are limited.

Registration opens Wednesday, Feb. 19, and closes March 10 at https://forms.office.com/r/Z7xt78af0q. Priority is given to students who have not attended a Jill of All Trades event in the past.

The event, which has been a success internationally, includes many hands-on workshops in the motive power, manufacturing and construction trades sectors.

OC trades program administrator Kelsey Ross, who was the main organizer of Jill of all Trades at the Vernon campus last November, said there is a widespread shortage of trades workers.

"The trades right now is one of the most high demand careers out there, and there's just not enough people working in the trades," said Ross. "And how we're going to fix that shortage is we need to get more women into the trades."

Female mentors lead the workshops to help young women develop a better understanding of the potential of skilled trades careers.
