Dementia patients, caregivers plan for the future

Free workshop, Personal Planning, helps family caregivers ensure that the wishes of a family member with dementia are honoured

For Vernon residents, a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias can instantly alter their futures.

And with that scenario becoming ever more common – more than one in three Canadians knows someone with Alzheimer’s disease – the Alzheimer Society of B.C. is helping them to prepare for the future.

The society is offering a free workshop, Personal Planning, that helps family caregivers ensure that the wishes of a family member with dementia are honoured.

“Starting to plan for the future as early as possible ensures that the person with dementia can play a role in making important health-care and financial decisions,” says Carly Gronlund, the society’s support and education coordinator for the North Okanagan and Vernon.

The workshop runs Thursday, July 28 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at The People Place, 3402 - 27th Ave. Pre-registration is required, by calling 1-800-634-3399 or e-mailing cgronlund@alzheimerbc.org.

The workshop is free thanks to a number of sponsors and donors.
