Festivals support cancer care

Dragon Boat Festival and Wine, Women and Woods raising funds

Dragon boats and golf clubs don’t usually mix, but that’s exactly what two local events are planning.

The Prospera Vernon Dragon Boat Festival has teamed up with the Wine, Women and Woods Tee Off for the Cure.

Both events contribute to the funding of mammography equipment at Vernon Jubilee Hospital.

Funds also support the breast cancer research in young women that’s being done through the University of B.C., with support coming from the B.C. region of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

“Giving back to the local community is definitely the focus of the Prospera Vernon Dragon Boat Festival” said Lisa George, event manager.

“The festival supports a broad range of community based rowing and paddling programs offered here in Vernon, encourages participation by all ages and abilities and aims to leave a substantial legacy at VJH.

“Combining the fundraising efforts of the festival and the Tee Off for the Cure is an exciting step forward,” said George.

Both events are approaching fast.

The Prospera Dragon Boat Festival takes place at Kal Beach Saturday while the Wine, Women and Woods tees up Sept. 7 and 8 at the Vernon Golf and Country Club.
